Good health starts with a healthy mouth.

When we talk about taking care of our health, we usually only think about our internal organs, but maintaining our oral health is also very important.

Our teeth and gums form a single unit. As a result, damage to our teeth also affects our gums. Conversely, teeth will suffer if the gums are not in good health.

The most common diseases are:

  • Caries
Tooth decay develops when bacteria convert food debris or sugar on the surface of teeth into acids which then affect or destroy tooth enamel.
  • Periodontitis
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the periodontium.

Effective protection!

Fluorides can be used orally to prevent tooth decay, for example in the form of fluoride tablets or by using fluoride toothpaste. Increased levels of fluoride in tooth enamel are essential for resistance to caries because:

  1. Fluorides support the remineralization process, meaning they help incorporate calcium phosphate from saliva into tooth enamel more quickly, helping to protect it.
  2. Fluorides, like calcium phosphates, are also incorporated into tooth enamel.
  3. The fluorides from the toothpaste form a kind of protective film/surface layer of calcium fluoride. When acids are formed, they are immediately neutralized by the surface layer – the minerals in the tooth enamel remain untouched, the tooth enamel remains solid. The resulting hydroxy-fluorapatite is more resistant to acids than normal hydroxyapatite.
  4. Fluorides are also absorbed by bacteria, which disrupts their metabolism. Consequently, the production of acid, which is so harmful to the teeth, is inhibited.

Using fluoride toothpastes provides additional protection against tooth decay as it hardens tooth enamel, making it more durable. It complements caries prevention measures but cannot replace them. Current cosmetics regulation allows fluoride levels in toothpastes of up to 0.15%.

LACALUT® - The evolution of an effective toothpaste

In the early 1920s, the company Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) experimented with the salt of lactic acid (lactic acid). At the same time, trials were conducted in many dental clinics to use strongly astringent aluminum salts to treat the unfortunately already very common cases of gingivitis and other periodontal diseases. In most cases, these experiments had extremely unsatisfactory results, as the gums would become severely inflamed. Finally, Boehringer Ingelheim was contacted and commissioned to conduct model experiments on the effectiveness of aluminum lactate.

The result was the tooth and gum powder “LACALUT” which was released on the market in 1925.

LACALUT® tooth and gum powder, produced by a special process, has been proven to thoroughly clean the teeth and significantly tighten the gums.

This astringent property had a positive effect on bleeding gums. LACALUT® powder was not only excellent for cleaning teeth but also as a prophylactic to prevent gingivitis.
